More than 40 years ago, the Fraser government created the Special Broadcasting Service as the first multicultural public broadcaster in the world. In 1978, the government saw SBS as a key piece of public infrastructure to support one of Australia's greatest social experiments: the transformation from a white European nation to a multicultural, partly Asian, society.
It was Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser's firm belief that, with leadership, education and encouragement, Australians could overcome any lingering xenophobia. Its principal function was to provide radio and television in multiple languages to inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society. All Australians.
Over the years, SBS became known to many as the ethnic broadcaster. It played endless soccer and even showed matches live from Europe late at night or in the early hours of the morning. Men and women were always treated to the best of foreign films, coincidentally, prior to a soccer match. Who can forget watching Betty Blue right before the FA Cup?
This design pays homage to the public broadcaster and its cheeky nickname, Sex Before Soccer. Well, the two do go together... right?
